Best & Worst Times to Visit Ho Chi Minh City

Written by Rita Updated May. 26, 2025

Planning your first trip to Vietnam? You'll probably start in Ho Chi Minh City, the dynamic heart of the south.

This tropical metropolis experiences two distinct seasons: the dry season from November to April and the rainy season from May to October.

Most travel guides stop at this simple seasonal divide. But just knowing "dry" or "wet" doesn't tell you what the weather really feels like. How hot is it in March? Does it pour all day in June?

In this guide, we go beyond the basics. You'll get a month-by-month breakdown of real temperatures, rainfall patterns, and what the weather actually feels like, so you can pick the best and avoid the worst time to visit Ho Chi Minh City.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Ho Chi Minh City?

The dry season (November to February) is the most pleasant time to visit the city. Humidity drops, skies are clearer, and rain is rare, especially in January and February, which also bring the coolest temperatures of the year.

Without weather disruption, you could explore the best of the city, whether you're sampling street food on a walking tour, exploring historical sites like the Cu Chi Tunnels, or taking a boat trip through the Mekong Delta.

Adding to its charm, the city lights up with festive energy during Christmas, New Year, and Tet (the Vietnamese Lunar New Year).

Other Good Months If You Don't Mind the Heat or a Little Rain

If you're not set on perfect weather, March, April, May, early June, and October can also be great times to visit, just with a few trade-offs.

March and April are dry but heat up quickly. April often hits 35°C (95°F), and can spike past 40°C (104°F). It's not for everyone, but if you're okay with early morning outings and some well-timed A/C breaks, you'll enjoy clear skies, thinner crowds, and vibrant local energy.

May, early June, and October are what we call shoulder months—some sun, some short showers, fewer tourists, and lower prices. They're a smart pick for flexible travelers and budget seekers.

When Is the Worst Time to Visit Ho Chi Minh City?

June to September marks the wettest season in Ho Chi Minh City. With monthly totals ranging from 150 to 250 mm, occasional street flooding occurs in low-lying areas. September, in particular, is the wettest month, with daily afternoon storms that can last from 1 to 2 hours.

Outdoor adventures are limited due to frequent downpours (around 17 days per month) and high humidity (80–90%).

Many tours, like biking in the Mekong Delta or visiting Cu Chi Tunnels, become uncomfortable or even unsafe due to slippery paths and sudden downpours. If you're on a tight schedule, you might miss out on the full experience because of the rain.

That said, the rainy season isn't all bad news. Fewer tourists mean shorter lines, better hotel deals, and easier restaurant reservations. For many of our guests who enjoy moody urban photography, the rainy season turns out to be a surprisingly rewarding time to visit as well.

What to Expect Each Month

Ho Chi Minh Monthly Weather

Jan–Feb|Best Time

This is when Saigon feels light and open. You could expect warm days at around 30°C (86°F) and cool nights at 20°C (68°F).

You could fully enjoy everything in the city without sweating, from walking tours to foodie Vespa rides. The Cu Chi tunnels are dry and breezy, with no stuffy underground. Nearby beaches like Phu Quoc and Mui Ne are postcard-perfect.

Tet (Vietnamese New Year) brings color, festive markets, and a cultural high.

Do note: some shops and attractions close for the first 3 days.

Mar–April|Big skies, bold heat, slow afternoons

March and April are dry and hot (35+°C/95+°F). Sunrise tours are guaranteed, and city tours still work if you head out before 9 a.m, and treat yourself to a rooftop cocktail, a cup of Vietnamese egg coffee, or an A/C break mid-day.

The heat kicks in by midday, so plan a rooftop cocktail, a hands-on cooking class, or an air-conditioned break. Cu Chi Tunnels can feel like an oven, and biking in the Mekong gets tough under the sun.

May|Mix of Sun and Rain

May is a transition month. It's still hot (32–33°C/90–91°F), but short, intense showers start rolling in. Traveling this month, you just need to leave your schedule flexible and plan your walking tours and outdoor excursions in the morning, when it's usually dry.

Hotels with pools, spas, or in-house cultural experiences (like cooking classes or spa treatments) make for great rainy-day plans.

Jun–Aug|Middle of the Rainy Season

Saigon enters the full rainy season. The high humidity makes the real temperature feel like 40°C (104°F) or higher. But afternoon downpours cool the city, with quick street flooding in low areas, though.

The city streets always stay lively in the rain. Water levels rise, and the Mekong looks wild and cinematic. If you go, go early, prepare for slick paths, and pack for rain.

It's summer break, so expect more crowds, especially at family spots. For a quieter feel, target early June or late August.

Sep–Oct|Stormy Skies, Green Landscapes

Still the peak rainy season. Expect high humidity and near-daily showers after 2 p.m.

You can do city tours and Cu Chi if you go early, but be ready for sudden storms. Mekong looks photogenic with high water and water lilies, but not always comfortable.

If beach time is a must, these months won't work. Phu Quoc and Mui Ne stay wet and gray—no sunsets, no swimming, just damp disappointment.

Traveling in these months, you would have chances to experience the Mid-Autumn Festival in Ho Chi Minh City, especially in the Chinatown area.

Nov–Dec|Back to Dry, Cool & Festive

Clear skies return. Days average 31°C (88°F) and humidity drops. City tours, Cu Chi, and Mekong rides feel effortless—like everything clicks.

December adds holiday sparkle—Notre-Dame lights, Christmas markets, and rooftop dinners. One of the best months for couples and families alike. It's also peak season, so flights and hotels fill up fast. Book at least 2–3 months ahead for top choices.
