September Weather in Cambodia: September Travel Guide to Cambodia

By Wendy Updated Oct. 19, 2021

September is the fourth wettest month of the year. The weather conditions in Cambodia during this time are more favorable for a vacation than in other months when the weather is hotter or wetter. In some cities, mornings are warm and sunny, with low levels of precipitation.

However, when there is rain, it usually only lasts for a couple of hours rather than the whole day. All in all, it is a great month to travel if you are happy to take a chance with the rain and are keen to avoid crowds.

Tips for Visiting Cambodia in September

Clothing: Although September falls in the wet season, it is important to note that Cambodia is a hot and tropical country. Therefore, rather than going for synthetic clothes, choose natural fabrics such as silk, cotton, and linen to keep you cool and comfortable.

Loose-fitting light cotton clothes such as long-sleeved shirts and pants will help protect you from mosquito bites. As it tends to get warm or hot during the day, jeans would not be a great choice.

As there is much rain during this month, remember to pack a raincoat or poncho and a light pair of walking boots or shoes, depending on the activities you plan on engaging in.

Hydration: Because the country is hot and warm, drinking lots of water and staying hydrated is imperative for your health.

Tourism in September: September is in the low tourist season because of constant rainfall, which makes it challenging to visit different destinations. For this reason, fewer tourists visit Cambodia this month, and most hotels offer good accommodation deals and bargains.

All of Cambodia turns lush green, and the lakes expand in size due to the rise in the water levels because of the rains.

Four Things to Do in Cambodia

Here are some exciting things to do in Cambodia:

1. Get a Glimpse of Cambodia’s Staggering Waterfalls

Cambodia is home to several breathtaking waterfalls, which are a delight to visit especially during this time of the year. Do consider venturing out to the Phnom Kulen Falls at the ancient city of Mahendraparvata.

The recently rediscovered city is symbolic to Cambodians as it is believed that this was where the Khmer Empire began.

Other waterfalls you can stop by include Teuk Chhou Waterfalls in Kampot and the famous Boo Sra Waterfall in Mondulkiri Province.

2.Explore Angkor Wat’s Scenic Temples

Angkor Wat is a must-see destination for most guests traveling to Cambodia. Thecrowdsaresparser in September, making it the best time for a tour.

You can expect to see photogenic temples with reflected in pools of water, glistening stone structures, and deep green vegetation. Take a moment to breathe in the fresh, rain-washed air.

3. See Wild Animals and Enjoy Nature in the Lush Jungles of Cambodia

This tropical country turns completely green in September, particularly in the dense northern jungles of Cambodia. The area encompassing Kratie boasts a variety of flora and fauna, especially in the huge nature reserves where monkeys, different species of reptiles, and rare river dolphins can be spotted.

4.Relish the Pchum Ben Festival

This 15-day festival starts in mid to late September depending on the lunar calendar. During this festival, locals honor their ancestors and pay their respects to their deceased relatives and receive blessings from their spirits in return.

Pchum Ben is one of Cambodia’s culturally significant occasions where each household makes a visit to its local wat(temple) and offers the monks food in appreciation for blessing the souls of their departed relatives and friends.

You can see Cambodians participating in this festival dressed in white, and you may notice the pagodas crowded with people taking turns to make their offerings.
