Written by Ishaan Updated Aug. 2, 2024

Are you planning a trip to Nepal in September? Read on to learn more about the weather in the country during this time of year, what you should pack in terms of clothing and gear, and the best places you ought to visit during the month in this Himalayan paradise.

Nepal Weather in September: Overview

  • Average temperature range: 19°C (66°F) – 26°C (79°F)
  • Rainfall: 320 mm (13 inches) in Kathmandu; 570 mm (22 inches) in Pokhara; 300 mm (12 inches) in Bharatpur.
  • Rainy days:10 in Kathmandu; 10 in Pokhara; 19 in Bharatpur.
  • Sunny days:10 in Kathmandu; 8 in Pokhara; 10 in Bharatpur.

Although September is still primarily rainy in Nepal, these rains begin to subside towards the latter part of the month. While it rains almost every single day for the first half of the month, it is much more sporadic during the second half.

If you travel to Nepal during the second half of September, you will be treated to slightly cooler temperatures and gradually decreasing levels of humidity. The average September temperatures range from lows of 19°C (66°F) to highs of around 26°C (79°F) in the lower plains and valleys but are much lower in the higher Himalayas.

Nepal's most iconic treks, including the Annapurna Base Camp trek, the Everest Base Camp trek, and the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, start welcoming hikers towards the end of September when the rains show signs of subsiding. We don't recommend getting on these trails at the beginning of September during which time it continues to rain almost every day. September is also a good time to explore some of the popular tourist sites in metropolitans like Pokhara and Kathmandu.

Weather of Nepal's Major Cities in September

City Min. Temp Max. Temp Rainfall
Kathmandu 19°C (66°F) 26°C (79°F) 320 mm (13 inches)
Pokhara 19°C (66°F) 26°C (79°F) 570 mm (22 inches)
Bharatpur
(Chitwan)
23°C (73°F) 26°C (79°F) 300 mm (12 inches)

Kathmandu (also Patan/Lalitpur): The weather in Kathmandu is characterized by moderate to high amounts of rainfall during the first half of September, and a resultant 82% humidity. The rains begin to subside towards the end of the month, with sunnier days replacing them and bringing fresh optimism at the start of another trekking season at the start of October. The average temperatures in September in the capital of Kathmandu range from highs of 26°C (79°F) to lows of 19°C (66°F).

Pokhara: Pokhara remains the rainiest of all the major cities in Nepal during September. However, as is the case with most of the country, the rains begin to relent towards the end of September, making this, and the beginning of October, good times to start hitting the trails. The average maximum temperatures in Pokhara for September are 26°C (79°F) whereas the average minimum is around 19°C (66°F).

Bharatpur (Chitwan): Although Bharatpur receives a relatively modest 300 mm (12 inches) of rainfall for the entirety of September, this grand total for the month is spread out over a whopping 19 days, meaning it's quite gloomy and humid in the city for most of the month. The average temperature range for September in Bharatpur is 23°C (73°F) – 26°C (79°F).

The Best Places to Visit in Nepal in September

1.Kathmandu

For most people, Kathmandu is the starting point for any trip in Nepal. Whether you're in the city before heading elsewhere on a trek, or just exploring the capital and admiring everything it has to offer, there's plenty for everyone here. Temples like Pashupatinath, museums like the Palace Museum, and sights like Buddha Stupa draw visitors from all over the country and South Asia alike, and are sure to help you appreciate the cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity of the country and its people.

2.Pokhara

The popular lakeside city of Pokhara draws a lot of travelers due to its location as a starting point for many treks in the Annapurna Conservation Area. Before heading out to explore the Annapurna range, guests to the city can spend their time shopping, dining at some fantastic restaurants serving both local and international fare, and exploring sites like Phewa Lake and the World Peace Pagoda.

3.Poon Hill (Trek)

Given that the trekking season still hasn't hit full swing by late September, it makes more sense to undertake a relatively shorter, more accessible, Nepali trek during this month. The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek (3210 meters/10,529 feet) is not terribly difficult whilst also being suitable for all age groups and fitness levels. The 5-day trek takes you through quaint Gandaki villages and rhododendron forests, before leaving you stunned with the views of Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhare, and Annapurna that serve as your reward for making it to the viewpoint.

September Crowds and Costs

As the days in September tick on, more and more travelers can be seen on the streets of Nepal's major cities, with the busiest period being the end of the month. While it's certainly not as busy as it's going to be in October and November, it's not quiet and lacking in crowds quite like it is during July and August either. The trekking season is right around the corner and the later on in September you get to Nepal, the more crowded you're likely to find it.

In anticipation of the new trekking season, prices for most things, including airfare, accommodation, and transportation, are also hiked to reflect the uptick in demand. Our suggestion would be to plan out your trip as far out in advance as possible and complete your bookings with plenty of time to spare, so as to avoid paying exorbitantly high last-minute prices.

What to Wear in Nepal in September

Because the first half of September in Nepal is likely to remain rainy, it's important you pack a few items that'll help keep you dry and comfortable. Additionally, if you plan on hitting the trails and embarking on a trek towards the end of the month, good hiking equipment will be required to make the trip with you.

When packing, the absolute basics for a trip to Nepal during the month of September should include the following items: tops and shorts made of quick-drying materials, sweatpants or capris, jeans, a reliable raincoat, umbrella, insect repellant, a light jacket, hoodie, sturdy waterproof shoes, sandals, sunscreen, sunglasses, and sunhats.

Keep in mind that it'll be a lot colder if you're heading for a hike in the higher altitudes. In addition to the items listed above, you should also make sure you pack the following items necessary for being well-equipped during an extended trek in Nepal: a good sturdy backpack, a daypack, sturdy waterproof trekking shoes, socks, quick-drying shirts, a fleece or hoodie, thick socks, down jacket, thermals, wind jacket, balaclava or winter hat, scarf, gloves, headlamp, toiletries, and trekking poles.
