Inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1982, Polonnaruwa Ancient City was built in the 11th century AD as King Vijayabahu declared capital in this locale. nce an ancient capital, Kandy boasts for both natural beauty and rich history. The museum building itself used to be the living ground for the royal families and its architectural features decipt the aesthetic values of ancient Kandyan Kingdom.

As early as in the 14th century, the palace was home to King Vickramabahu III (1357-1374) and the last king lived here was King Sri Vikrama Rajasinha from 1780 until he was overthrown by the British in 1815.

The Temple of Tooth is one of the most-worshiped temples in Sri Lanka

Day 6 Kandy - Nuware Eliya | Train Ride through Lush Tea Plantation

The Hill Club

After breakfast, take the fresh air in Royal Botanic Garden, just 6km outside Kandy in Peradeniya. The first king who took residence in Royal Palace of Kandy, King Wickramabahu III also built up this garden when he ascended the throne in 1371. The garden is devided into different themed sections, and today you will visit the Orchid House, Palm Avenue and Spice Garden. Have a simple lunch inside the garden.
Transfer to Peradeniya Train Station and take the Expo Train to Nanu Oya Train Station of Nuwara Eliya, which is known as Tea Country Train Ride. Sri Lanka's railway network was initially built in 1864 with very little upgrate ever since, thus the railroad is narrow and the train is traveling at a relatively low speed less than 100km/h. That said the ride is very much enjoyable as you can see the landscape change dramatically from plains to mountains laced with lush tea planatation, forest swaying in breeze to rushing waterfalls making big sound, as well as lovely local people.
The train will arrive at Nuwa Oya Train Station in the afternoon and you will be taken to your hotel by your private chauffeur guide. Driving time from Nanu Oya Train Station to your hotel in Nuwara Eliya is about 40 minutes.

Journey information

  • Seasonal information: Sri Lanka is under the influence of two separate monsoons yet good weather comes from time to time throughout the year. From April to September, west and southwest coasts and hill country will be affected by the main southwest monsoon which brings considerable rainfall. During November to next March, northeast monsoon hits the east coast. Generally speaking, the best time to visit Sri Lanka falls between these two separate monsoons, namely the end of September and next March.
Rainfall wouldn't be a problem either if you plan to travel during the two rainy seasons as long as the trip is planned well and logically. During this time of year, you wouldn't encounter crowds at the attractions and occasional power cut due to overuse. Traveling for amazing value of money, you will also enjoy peacefulness around the national parks and beaches.
  • Visas: All nationalities are required to obtain the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for Sri Lanka except for citizens of Maldives, Seychelles and Singapore. Citizens of these three countries can apply for visa on arrival free of charge.
Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA): ETA can be applied by yourself online at a cost ranging from USD25 to 35 per person. We have included ETA so much time and trouble will be saved.
  • Feeding the elephants: Get closer to the elephants, you will have a chance to feed one of them with either a banana or a bottle of milk. Great experience for children, however, make sure they are gentle to these animals and pulling or poking the elephant's nose is not really welcome.
  • Train Ride in the Tea Country: Travelers can choose from government-run rails or private ones and we choose Oberservation Class or 1st Class for your comfort. As indicated by name, Observation Class is at the end of the car, featuring with armchairs facing the large observation window. 1st Class cars are in the middle, featuring leather seats of 4 in a row, giving you much more space than 2nd Class seats (which are favorited by backpackers and local touts) and there are two big viewing windows at both sides of the car.
Tickets of Observation Class and 1st Class are open to sale in 10 days ahead and they are understandably very popular and easy to get snapped out once available.
Your chauffeur guide will take you to the train station in Peradeniya and say goodbye. He then will drive to Nuna Oya Train Station and pick you up upon your arrival. Your big luggage will be in his car and you will only need to bring valube stuff, such as passport, cash, wallet, camera and a bottle of water. Hold on to your ticket because you will need it both for getting onboard and getting off.
There will be some local vendors selling snacks on the train. We suggest you only try out what's fresh, such as cut-out pineapple of mangos.
  • Meals:Daily breakfast at hotels and a lunch for days with sightseeing are included, so are some dinners as mentioned in the itinerary. For meals that are not included, your tour guides will suggest where and what to eat.
Food in these three countries is mainly rice-based and you will eat a lot of vegetables, fish, chicken and beef, as well as curries and spiced dipping for dishes. If you would like to make special arrangements, such as Halal or Kosher food, or none-dairy, please inform your travel advisor at the time of inquiry. We will do our best to accommodate you.
  • Transportation: You will have a private car in each destination; our cars are within 5 years of usage and your private drivers will be polite and drive with strong regard for safety.
Domestic flights are not oftentime seen in Sri Lanka and all domestic transportation is done by private car.
It takes a lot of time to travel between cities so we suggest you prepare some thing for the ride: such as a pillow, books and eletronics. Normally, we will use one sedan car for group of 1 to 3 persons with enough space for luggage. More than one car will be asigned to you with you are travelling with more than 2 people.
  • Arrangements Sightseeing, activities and accommodations that are mentioned in this tour you are looking at are just for your inspiration.
If you want to want to stay in Colomobo on the day of arrival, we will remove the afternoon boat trip; if you would like to have some western food for lunch, we will try to manage that.
If you are looking for experiences that are not done by others, Discovery your way, Asia Highlights' motto suites you the best.
  • Responsible travel: Travel avails you with special experiences. Somehow its impact on the local community can be more beyond imagination and what Asia Highlights wishes to do is lead the impact onto a good path, a path that helps the local people (not only your tour guides) boarden their outlook and the local communities develop.
Some lunches are served at local restaurants that create job opportunities for the locals. Taking baby steps one at a time, we highly appreciate you would like to be part of it (of course, we can make other arrangements if needed).
With that being said, detours to so-called factories or specialty workshops are strictly prohibited. We make sure your tour guides earn enough to support their families without squeezing commissions out of you.
