Flavors of Krabi

Southern Thai food is one of the famous cuisines in the country and uses a variety of herbs and spices, creating aromatic tastes and smells. Krabi's cuisine is mostly influenced by Malaysian and Muslim cuisines but it still has the spiciness which represents Thai cuisine.

Mangroves and corals make the underwater world of the Andaman Sea fertile. Krabi has a long history of fishing industry and therefore seafood is the staple food of Krabi people today.

Due to Krabi's tropical climate, it is a perfect place for growing a huge variety of tropical fruit such as durian, pomegranate, mango, jackfruit, orange, pineapple, etc. Some Thai fruits are incredibly sweet and juicy, while the taste or texture might seem strange at first.

Food in Krabi

Krabi cuisine mainly is characterized by its unique and rich taste, the sauces here run yellow, orange and red, with combinations of shrimp, squid, fish, or pork, beef, or chicken, and an array of vegetables. Southern Thai dry fry curries (without coconut milk) are also popular here.

Seafood

Seafood in Krabi is abundant, used in many dishes and is also made into processed products. It is available at all main tourist destinations. Seafood includes aquatic animals such as fish and shellfish, as well as edible seaweed.

Krabi is home to a vast selection of beautiful fresh seafood. Try prawns, squid and mussels; they are simply yummy! A word of advice, though: Avoid the spicy seafood dip, it can be extremely piquant if you are not used to it.

Khao Man Kai

Its name literally means 'oiled rice chicken', but don't let this turn you off. This Thai version of Hainanese chicken rice is basically fragrant rice cooked in rich broth and topped with juicy and tender chicken. It's common to enjoy it with fresh salad, a spicy dip and a bowl of clear soup. It is widely available in most restaurants.

Hainanese chicken rice is most commonly associated with Singaporean, Malaysian and Hainanese cuisines, although it is also popular in Thailand. This is a dish adapted from early Chinese immigrants, originally from Hainan province in southern China.

Tom Yum

Tom Yum is a type of hot and sour Thai soup, usually cooked with shrimp (prawn). Tom Yum has its origin in Thailand. In recent years, Tom Yum has been popularized around the world. The soup often includes meat such as chicken, beef, pork, or shrimp.

Tom Yum is characterized by its distinct hot and sour flavors, with fragrant spices and herbs generously used in the broth. The basic broth is made of stock and fresh ingredients such as lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, galangal, lime juice, fish sauce, and crushed chili peppers. You can find this easily across the country and available at restaurants and food stalls.

Kaeng Tai Pla

This is a curry of the southern Thai cuisine. Its name is derived from Tai Pla, a salty sauce made from fermented fish entrails which gives the curry a strong smell and flavor. This curry is usually served with fresh vegetables in a separate plate and eaten along with steamed rice.

Kaeng Tai Pla is a highly spicy curry; it has a very intense umami taste. It is made mainly with fish and vegetables. Sometimes it includes prawns, and certain variants use coconut milk instead of water. The usual ingredients of the dish can include bamboo shoots, eggplants, pea eggplants, yard-long beans and fresh chilies. This curry is easy to find in restaurants or at markets in the southern part of Thailand

Yam Naem Khao Thot

Yam Naem Khao Thot (also known as Naem Khluk) is a salad made from crushed, deep-fried ball shaped croquettes made from sticky rice and curry paste as the main ingredients, tossed together with shredded fermented pork sausage, and mixed with peanuts, crushed dried chilies, lime juice, sliced shallots and fresh herbs, and served with a selection of fresh greens and additional herbs on the side. You can find this refreshing dish at street stalls or market stalls.

Tea in Thailand is a bit different because it is usually sweetened with sugar and condensed milk and served chilled.
