Food and Drinks in Phuket

By Chris QuanUpdated Mar. 8, 2023

Thai food is world-renowned for its wonderful flavors and fresh ingredients, balancing salty, sweet, and sour tastes. As a popular, stunning beach holiday destination, you’ll get to enjoy fresh local ingredients – especially seafood.

Thalang Road in Phuket Old Town is the best place to taste various kinds of local food and also the city’s best street food stalls, where you can get barbecued meat or sticky rice. You can also try other local specialties like Mee Hokkien noodles or Dim Sum which are a taste of Chinese fusion. If you love food, you will love Phuket.

Quick Facts

  • Many restaurants in Phuket offer a huge selection of local, Asian and western food to suit every taste.
  • Go to Phuket food markets to try everything from sliced fresh fruit, grilled meat skewers, dim sum, fishcakes, flat breads, to ice cream.
  • Many people want to eat seafood when visiting Phuket, and you'll see seafood displays outside many restaurants on the main beaches.
  • Don’t be scared by the word “spicy". There are degrees of spiciness, depending on your preference. You can order any dish to be cooked a little bit spicy, medium, or blazing hot.
  • Drink an exotic cocktail or some local beer, like Chang or Phuket Lager, at one of the most famous nightlife and bars areas: Bangla Road.

Flavors of Phuket

Phuket, with one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, is also popular for its culinary background, with hundreds of food readily available in restaurants and on the street. It was placed within the lauded ranks of UNESCO’s World’s Leading Cities of Gastronomy in 2011, due to its unique food scene.

It is already well known for its fresh succulent seafood, but it is also rapidly gaining a reputation as a great place to find excellent Thai and international food in some very picturesque venues.

You can find a range from Italian and Middle Eastern to Indian and Japanese food. In addition, wine has become readily available in Phuket, with some local restaurants now featuring creditable wine cellars.

Food in Phuket

Due to the island’s strategic location and its lengthy history of trade with China, India, and Portugal, Phuket is one of Thailand’s most culturally diverse destinations. In Phuket you’ll find marvelous southern Thai food, Malay food, Chinese food, and even Indian food.

The island is also blessed with access to an abundance of tropical fruit, vegetables and fresh seafood. Additionally, Phuket is one of Thailand’s most vegetarian-friendly destinations; so if you’re vegetarian, you’ll have lots to choose from.

Tom Yum Goong

Tom Yum Goong is basically known as a mixture of spicy prawn and sour soup which is one of the most favorite dishes. Its main ingredients are coconut milk, red chili, mushrooms, herbs and spices. Tom Yum soup is sour, spicy and delightful at the same time and it goes great with rice or noodles.

Mee Hokkien Noodles

Mee Hokkien Noodles are a must-try local Phuket food before you leave. These simple stir-fried thick and yellow noodles come with pork, egg, squid, bean sprouts and prawns. They are usually served with lime juice and sambal chili. This Phuket specialty is very delicious, and you will surely come back for more.

Massaman Curry

The flavor of Massaman Curry is surprisingly good, with the added sweetness of coconut milk. A bit of sourness from lime juice and the flavorful aroma of basil and lime leaves, as well as the thickness of tomatoes and peanuts make this curry even better.

The ingredients go perfectly together and make a toothsome dish. This must-try Phuket food actually has various versions, depending on the ingredients used which can be fish, beef or pork. This curry is best with noodles or steamed rice.

Dim Sum

When talking about Dim Sum, you will surely be surprised to learn about this Chinese fusion food in Phuket. As there will be several kinds of Dim Sum on the menu, it is smart to find out which are recommended by the locals. The best type of Dim Sum are the ones that are folded about seven times with the fluffy and glowing look.

Fillings are said to be diverse, including pork, prawn, green beans and shrimp. Dim Sum are amazingly smooth and rich in flavor.

Kanom Jeen

The Kanom Jeen is another Phuket must-try food that will allow you to indulge in delicious soup made of mushrooms, tomatoes, lemongrass, chicken and galangal, cooked in coconut milk. Normally, some chili is added to the dish but it's not that spicy and very flavorful.

To make a mind-blowing bowl of Kanom Jeen, you need to pick up some of the best ingredients of beef, chicken, fish, crab and vegetables.

Drinks in Phuket

While enjoying the beaches, the local markets, and other entertainment, make sure you stay hydrated in the heat of Phuket weather. Quench your thirst with Phuket’s refreshing and healthy juice, sweet and colorful milk tea, local coffee and beer options.

Juices

Freshly squeezed juices are hands down the best way to mentally escape Phuket’s seemingly inescapable heat. You can watch as the inside of the fruit of your choosing is crushed right before your eyes and put into a slender plastic bottle. While there are many different fruit juices you can enjoy, pomegranate or sugarcane juice are some of the best choices.

Coconut Water

You will find coconut water already made, put into a large cylinder or container and then scooped out into a cup for you to enjoy. Thick, juicy slices of coconut are shaved out of its hard covering and mixed in with water. You can get coconut water pure, or vendors can put in a large helping of sugar water to give it a punch of flavor.

Smoothies

Many kinds of smoothies are worth trying, from watermelon smoothies, scooped into its own watermelon bowl, to a freshly blended combination of carrots, dragon fruit and more. Many of these smoothies are made with specific health benefits in mind — for example, you can order a pineapple, orange and apple smoothie to help with digestion.

Coffee

Phuket also has a variety of specialty coffees. For one, this drink makes the list because of its abundance and availability. If you are a coffee connoisseur, then the street-side stalls selling coffee from their carts might not be your brew of choice. If you don’t like sweet, be sure to ask your barista to omit condensed milk from your drink.

Beer

Phuket has a local beer brand called Phuket Lager Beer. This is the one you want to taste if you’re looking for a fantastic flavor and an authentic regional appeal. It’s got plenty of awards to its name. The pale lager has hints of lime and grass and the “fruity” appeal of many island lagers. The beer is brewed with premium German hops and Thai jasmine rice. You can drink it while enjoying Phuket beaches or nightlife.
