Bangkok and Chiang Mai
In Bangkok, our guide Ann and driver "Mr. Ot" (I don't know how to spell his name) were very friendly and professional. You simply can't underestimate the value of having an English speaking guide to show you around, and a driver with a comfortable, sizeable, air-conditioned van take you from place to place. Ann taught us so much about Thailand's history, food, and religion. Mr. Ot always opened our door with a smile, and had cool towels and ice-cold bottled water for us. More

Excellent guide in Siem Reap
Our recent time spent in Siem Reap was made even more memorable by our expert guide, Som Piseth. Som was knowledgeable, attentive, flexible and super helpful - we learnt so much about Siem Reap and Cambodia in our 3 days with him. His English was excellent and his knowledge of, and pride in, his country was outstanding. We would highly recommend Som for anyone wanting an excellent guide in Siem Reap! More

Get a local SIM card
It is recommended to get your own SIM card to get internet access while traveling. You get a SIM card for US$ 1.50 and you can top it up with credits depending on your usage.
There are three major network providers in Thailand: AIS, DTAC and True. Getting them is very easy: As soon as you exit the arrival gate at the airport, there are a lot of phone network stands waiting for you. Otherwise you could get them from any convenience store such as Seven Eleven or any mobile phone shop in the city.
It is advised to get a weekly or monthly plan to get a better deal on the data quota, instead of topping up your own credits. Prices for weekly and monthly plans start from US$ 3 and go up to US$ 30. The major network provider services work well generally in all areas of Thailand.
If you come from a western country, there will be a high chance of your phone being locked to your local network provider. Sorry to inform you, you will not be able to use a Thai SIM card with locked phones. Remember to check your phone before going to Thailand and bring an unlocked phone, should you have one.
One great tip to keep your main SIM card safe: Tape it to your wallet. If your phone is one with the pinhole type SIM card tray, be sure to bring the opener or a paperclip.
Local and international calls at your fingertips
Making international phone calls is as simple as dialing the network provider code (varies between providers; for example 00500) > country code > area code > destination number. The price per minute may vary between operators.
Communicating between friends is much easier when using a local SIM card; prices for such start from US$ 1. Depending on the package you purchase, usually there are phone call credits included in the initial price you pay.
Free Wi-Fi
Free Wi-Fi is easy to find in hotel lobbies, many restaurants and cafes. Just purchase any food or drink and you will be able to enjoy free access. Generally they are safe, though if you are concerned about cyber security, it is advisable to use your own internet from the SIM card.

Some hotels provide internet service with the PC and it will be charged according to the period of usage. When you are outside of the hotel and in need of internet service, head to one of the many internet cafes.
Internet cafes are very common in Thailand. You will be charged according to the period of usage, usually with a minimum charge of 10 minutes. Price per minute generally is US$ 0.10. Internet cafes also serve snacks and drinks.

Newspapers
English language newspapers can keep you up-to-date on what's going on locally. There are two newspapers to choose from: Bangkok Post and The Nation. They are only US$ 1, if you purchase them from the newsstand. Some hotels might provide newspapers for your convenience.
Bangkok Post and The Nation newspapers cover news about politics, sports, economy and tourism, both within Thailand and International. Keeping up-to-date in the financial world is also easy. Thai Financial Post is the online source for daily financial and economic news about Thailand and its major trading partners.
24 hour television
Some of Bangkok's television channels do a 24 hour broadcast. Names of the major channels are: Channel 3, TV5, CH7, Channel 9 MCOT HD, NBT, Thai PBS and many more. Programs that are popular in Thailand are mixed. Many of the terrestrial channels show a lot of news and current affairs programs, although there are some entertainment programs too. The programs are mostly in Thai.
Those who want English language television will need to have cable or satellite television installed. In order to obtain cable or satellite services you will need to provide copies of your passport and the House Registration document for the property you are in, if you have purchased it.
If you are renting, the landlord will need to provide a copy of their own ID card and house documentation. On occasion you may also be asked to provide your visa documentation, to show that you have the legal right to live in the country.
