The beach is one of the biggest and most compelling reasons that bring travelers to Thailand. With over 2,000 miles of coastline and 8,000 tropical islands, one might take considerable time to plan a beach holiday in Thailand, due to excessive choices.
Here we provide some insights to help you plan your trip to southern Thailand, where the sand is white and the water is turquoise.
Thailand is a year-round beach destination. Amazing hideaways are always available, as the climate varies slightly due to the seasons. But when is the best time?
In southern Thailand, there are two main seasons, wet and dry. The seasons do not coincide on the west coast (e.g. Phuket Island, Krabi) and the east coast (e.g. Koh Samui).
On the west coast, the wet season lasts from May until November, while on the east coast it lasts from November until May. The sun can be very intense in April, as it is the hottest month across the country, even in the south.
Phuket is always hot! Temperatures stay between 25°C (77°F) and 32°C (90°F). The best time to visit Phuket is from November to February, with sunshine and mild temperatures, between 28°C (82.4°F) and 32°C (90°F). During these months, expect to find calmer seas and more crowded beaches, as these are the driest, sunniest months and hence the peak season in Phuket.
Located on the west coast, the climate in Krabi is almost similar to Phuket. The temperature is between 28°C (82.4°F) and 32°C (90°F) all year long. The best time to visit is from December until April. It’s crowded almost everywhere in Krabi but the weather is perfect with a clear blue sky.
It’s always pleasant throughout the year in Koh Samui, with temperatures ranging between 26°C (78.8°F) and 29°C (84.2°F). The best time to visit is in June, as the weather tends to cool down with a sprinkle of rain and with fewer crowds, but if you want to be on the beach all day long without any raindrop to bother, March to May is best. Expect more crowds from mid-January to February.
After a short acquaintance with Thailand’s climate above, you may want to pick the best beach based on your preference. Below, we divide our suggestions based on your travel time and your interest.
On Thai shores, caramel or pearly white sand beaches wait for you all year long. You can visit any time, during summer break, Christmas and winter break, or even at any random time.
For your summer holiday, we recommend Koh Samui. During these months, June to August, the weather is cooler, fewer raindrops and fewer crowds. While during Christmas/New Year or winter break (from December to February), Phuket, and Krabi will be good choices.
If you’re traveling with your special friends or with family, you may want something more than just sun and beach. Thailand offers a wide choice depending on your companions, for example a quiet and romantic gateway in an idyllic, luxurious resort for honeymooners or full beach activities such as kayaking, island hopping or banana boat for a family with kids.
Choosing a beach that is exactly suitable for you, means you need to do a lot of research; our article on How to Choose Beach Destination for your Trip to Thailand will be of great help.
