January Weather in Yangon - One of the Best Time to Travel

By Wendy Updated Oct. 26, 2022

Weather: There are three seasons in Myanmar. January falls in the dry season. There are low temperatures at night, but it's not as cold as in December. It barely rains either. January is one of the best times to travel to Yangon.

Clothing: It's warm in January. However, there is a big temperature difference between day and night. T-shirt and shorts are enough for daytime. As night falls, you need to put on a thin sweater and a pair of pants to keep warm.

High Season: It might cost you a bit more to make a trip to Yangon in January, but it's worth it. There's no need to worry about the weather as you're traveling around.

Visit Shwedagon Pagoda

Shwedagon Pagoda, also known as the Great Dagon Pagoda, is a must visit place if you're interested in Buddhist art and culture. It's regarded as the most sacred religious site in Myanmar.

According to legend, Shwedagon is the oldest pagoda in the world, with a history of over 2,600 years. It stands 99 meters tall. You can enjoy stunning sunrises and sunsets there most of the time during January. Myanmar's National Day falls on the fourth day of January.

Religious ceremonies are convened at many pagodas during this month. Many people visit the pagodas on pilgrimage to present offerings, and to show their respect and support as Buddhists. January is the perfect time to tour Shwedagon Pagoda, and experience the different culture there.

Have an Authentic Taste of Local Life: China Town

China Town, a must-see night-spot in Yangon, is only a 10-minute walk from Bogyoke Aung San Market. It has lots of restaurants offering a wide variety of food and the prices are quite good. In addition, there are different kinds of stalls lined up along the main street, selling fresh seasonal fruit, grilled meat and other snacks. Unlike the rainy season, January is a pleasant time to explore China Town.

Ngwesaung beach: If you want to crash out and relax after a few days' stressful travel, Ngwesaung would be your number one choice. With its beautiful long silvery strand, it has been one of the most popular laid–back low-budget places ever since it was developed in 2000. In January the climate offers you a wonderful break with blue skies, clear water, fresh air and beach-tanning.
