Things to Do
November is in the dry season and the peak tourism season. We recommend that you do outside activities rather than inside ones. Taking horse-drawn carts to the countryside, strolling around the temples, or walking in Inwa are good options for you in this pleasant weather.
Take Horse-Drawn Carts to the Countryside
In such pleasant weather, you can explore the ancient city, Inwa, in a special way, the horse-drawn cart.
You will cross the Irrawaddy River on a ferry. When you reach the other side of the river, you can take a horse-drawn buggy for two people. The horses and carts are beautifully decorated. There are many sites to visit and the horse-drawn carts provide excellent access to them all.
There are several main sites in Inwa, including the Yadana Hsemee Pagoda Complex, Lawka Tharaphu Pagoda, the Maha Aungmye Bonzan Monastery, the Bagaya Monastery, and the ruined tower of the old Ava Palace. In addition, there are remains of the outer walls of the city.
The ride takes you through the most beautiful countryside, down little dirt tracks, and through the old gates of the outer wall. This is a very enjoyable trip where culture and history collide.
Tip:
You should cover your knees and shoulders with suitable clothing when riding in a horse-drawn cart.
Marvel at the Bagaya Monastery
Being one of Myanmar's finest surviving teak monasteries, Bagaya Kyaung or the Bagaya Monastery was built in 1838 AD. It is decorated with intricate carvings, floral arabesques, curved figurines, and the reliefs of birds and animals.
It's worth a stop at the monastery to marvel at all the teak wood, pillars, and ruins. But the best thing is to go around with your buggy along the tracks, coming across nameless abandoned monuments, which are full of mystery and fascination.
If you are lucky enough, you will have an opportunity to view a monk having lessons with some of his pupils. He is totally surrounded by books and papers nestled in a small corner while the pupils bend completely forward while doing their lessons. There is a very gentle, relaxed atmosphere there.
Tip:
We recommend that you take a flashlight along to aid in viewing the interior as some magnificent detailing still remains.
Visit Nanmyin Watchtower
If you want to visit a leaning tower, you don't have to go to Italy but to Myanmar. There, you"ll find an Asian Pisa-style tower, Nanmyin Watchtower.
Nanmyin Watchtower is also known as "the leaning tower of Inwa" due to its decided lean. Portions of the base were shattered during the 1838 earthquake, thus climbing to the top is not allowed; however, some local men are always available to give you prohibited private tours.
This is worth a stop on the way to the Bagaya Monastery.
