Universal Studios Japan is a cool place to visit in August. It is a theme park with world-class family entertainment for all ages. Most of the rides and attractions are based on popular movie franchises, such as Harry Potter and Jurassic Park. You will also get a chance to take photos with popular characters, such as Snoopy, Hello Kitty, and the Muppets.

August is a great time to visit cool mountainous areas. Mount Koya, or Koyasan, is a wooded area that is an important center for the Shingon school of Buddhism. August is the hottest month in Sapporo with an average temperature of 23°C (73°F). The average maximum temperature is 26°C (79°F), and the average minimum temperature is 19°C (66°F). Sapporo receives rainfall for around 19 days in August, with 124 mm (5 inches) of precipitation.

August is the best time to visit Sapporo Odori Beer Garden, one of the largest beer gardens in Japan with about 13,000 seats. Sit back and relax with a mug of beer and some snacks. The garden hosts the famous Sapporo Summer Festival, which takes place in July–August. The park gets very crowded around 4:00 p.m., so it is recommended you arrive in the early afternoon to get a better seat.

Otaru is a nearby small city, connected by train. It is wise to do a day trip to this old trade and fishing port from Sapporo. You can walk down to the beautiful Otaru Canal, try the local food at Sakaimachi Dori shopping street, taste the Japanese whiskey at Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery, and visit Herring Mansion to learn more about the fishing history of Otaru.

During the festival, the traditional Bon Odori dance is performed in parks, temples, and other public places around Japan.

Sapporo Summer Festival

Sapporo Summer Festival lasts for a month, starting from the middle of July. It is a time when the locals, as well as tourists, enjoy various traditional events and fireworks.

A beer feast is held at the Sapporo Odori Beer Garden, the Tanuki Festival is organized with Hokkai Bon Odori dance performances at Tanukikoji shopping street, and the Susukino Festival is held, which features the famous boat festival, Bon Odori dance, fireworks display, and firefly hunting.
