Best Times to Visit Rajasthan and When the Monsoon Is (Updated 2024)

The largest state in north India, Rajasthan, is rich in glorious history, magnificent palaces, and desert scenery. It's well-known for its colorful cities: pink Jaipur, blue Jodhpur, red Bikaner, white Udaipur, and golden Jaisalmer.

Rajasthan shares a similar climate pattern with most of India, i.e., there are three seasons in Rajasthan: the dry season (October to March), hot season (April to June), and monsoon season (July to September).

The dry season is undoubtedly the best time to visit Rajasthan weatherwise. However, you could enjoy better prices and less crowding during the hot season and wet season.

Best Time to Visit Rajasthan: October to March

During this period, your trip won't be affected by the weather. The daily high temperature averages around 27°C (80°F). Even in the coldest month, January, the daily temperature reaches around 23°C (73°F).

But you need to prepare for the cool/mild nights and early mornings when the temperature drops to 15°C (59 °F) on average.

With dry and cool weather, you can pleasantly indulge in tiger safaris, camel safaris and desert camping. For closer interactions with locals, don't miss Rajasthan's colorful festivals, such as its Kite Festival in January, Desert Festival in February, and Holi in March.

Best Times for the Most Favorable Weather

December to February is the best time to visit Rajasthan with mild–warm temperatures and only very occasional light rain. You'd have plenty of sunshine hours and enjoyable daytime temperatures of around 16–26°C (61–79°F).

During this peak season with the best weather, most travelers head to Rajasthan to comfortably admire its beauty. The number of travelers typically reaches its peak between December 22 and January 7. So do the prices!

Best Times for Good Weather and Better Prices

September to November is the transition from the monsoon season to the dry season. Meanwhile, March is when Jaipur changes from warm to hot weather, when all the day is still comfortable for outdoor activities if you are willing to risk a light shower or slightly higher temperatures reaching 30°C (86°F) on average.

Visit Udaipur and Jaipur for cooler temperatures in March. Jaisalmer and Jodhpur are drier between September and November.

Besides generally acceptable weather, fewer crowds and lower prices make March and September–November good times to travel to Rajasthan.

Hottest Time to Visit Rajasthan: April to June

April to June is regarded as the regional summer or hot season in Rajasthan. Due to the desert climate, the average high temperature hovers at 38°C (100°F), though it falls to around 25°C (77°C) at night.

If you can bear the heat, having the attractions to yourself and paying the lowest prices would be your reward. For example, you could stay at a luxury resort just paying around a peak-season 4-star-hotel room rate.

Except for the desert safaris, most other attractions are available, including the splendid palaces and forts. You are advised to explore them in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the extreme heat. A private air-conditioned car and cold drinks (which we provide on our tours) would be the ideal complement to hot-season sightseeing.

If you'd like a cooler place on your Rajasthan tour, you're suggested to visit Mt. Abu, the famous hill station in Rajasthan.

What is the Hottest Month in Rajasthan?

The highest temperatures usually occur in May, soaring above 40°C (104°F). Then, it is challenging to enjoy Rajasthan due to the sweltering heat!

Meanwhile, dust storms might blow up in the desert areas. Udaipur (city of lakes) and Mt. Abu (hill station) are the more comfortable places in Rajasthan to travel to.

Hot May is the ideal time to spot tigers in Ranthambore National Park, though. Thirsty tigers are likely to be seen near lakes or rivers.

The Monsoon in Rajasthan: July to September

Rajasthan's monsoon rainfall approaches at the end of June, peaks in July and August, and fades away in September. During the monsoon season, Rajasthan becomes cooler and the greenery makes it more charming.

Thanks to its desert climate, most cities in Rajasthan receive only low to moderate rainfall. The closer you get to the Thar Desert, the less rain you should encounter. Jodhpur, Bikaner, and Jaisalmer are great drier-weather getaways in the wet season. A trip there would rarely be affected since they just get 1–5 rainy days a month during the monsoon season.

If you travel in August, you might have a chance to experience the Teej Festival (August 7 in 2024). You might see local girls and women dancing and singing to celebrate the monsoon.

In this rainy low travel season, you'll get great deals from hotels and airlines. The calm environment, subdued by downpours, adds more charm to the "Land of Kings".

If you're keen to have a wildlife safari, especially a tiger safari, you'd better avoid the monsoon months, because most national parks in Rajasthan are shut.

What is the Wettest Month in Rajasthan?

In Rajasthan, the heaviest rainfall arrives in July and August, but the wettest month varies from city to city. Considering the most popular cities, July is the wettest month in Udaipur, Jodhpur, and Bikaner, while Jaipur and Jaisalmer are wettest in August.

According to the records, there are just 10 rainy days at most in Rajasthan's wettest month. So, you would still have a lot of sightseeing hours in July/August. Keeping your itinerary flexible is highly beneficial to minimizing the negative effects of rain showers.
