Traveling to India for your Honeymoon
India is especially great for honeymooning couples because it has the perfect mixture of romantic scenery, gorgeous architecture, and activities that will deepen a couple's connection with one another.
When traveling to India, most people will start their honeymoon journey in Delhi. In Delhi, you can try street food and explore the city's oldest and largest markets.
After Delhi, it is a quick trip to Agra where you can take in the beauty of the Taj Mahal during sunrise and sunset from the comfort of your hotel balcony.
For outdoors lovers, a safari in Ranthambhore is a great way to enjoy some of the country's incredible wildlife and its elusive wild tigers. After exploring the national parks together, couples can deepen their spiritual connection by watching or participating in incredible light rituals on the Ganges River in Varanasi.
Some of the most romantic and scenic cities in all of India are the pink city of Jaipur and the blue city of Jodhpur. Here couples can have romantic days exploring decadent palaces and discovering new things in the narrow alleyways of these ancient cities.
After exploring North India for a change of scenery, you can head to the state of Kerala in South India. In Kerala, couples can unwind on houseboats as they explore small villages through ancient canals or experience exciting flavors and spices unique to this area of the country.
Best Honeymoon Destinations in India
For honeymoon trips, it’s best for couples to choose a mixture of exciting cultural experiences and relaxing activities. This creates a perfect trip where newlyweds can learn more about Indian culture and also learn more about each other.
There are so many things to do and see in India that it can be difficult to know what is best for you and your spouse. Below we have listed the honeymoon destinations that our travelers love the most.
Start Your Honeymoon in Delhi
New Delhi is the capital city of India and because it has a large international airport, it is a convenient place to start your trip. Delhi is an incredible city that is bursting with people from all different parts of India so it’s a great place to explore.
Start your journey by exploring Old Delhi, the original walled city that was built in 1639. Here you will find the Jama Masjid mosque which is the largest in India and was built by Shah Jahan, the Mughal Emperor who also built the Taj Mahal.
After checking out Jama Masjid, visitors can explore the nearby Chandni Chowk market by rickshaw. This market is bustling with activity and is one of the most crowded markets in India. It's a great place to experience the fast-paced Delhi lifestyle and also try some street food or buy your first souvenirs.
Have an Inspiring Day at the Taj Mahal in Agra
The Taj Mahal can only be described as exquisite with its thousands of semi-precious stones and perfectly symmetrical design. The construction of this world wonder took 20 years and over 20,000 people.
One thing to keep in mind when visiting the Taj Mahal is that the building itself can get busy due to its popularity as an attraction, but luckily there are many ways to see it and also avoid the crowds.
A good way to see the Taj Mahal is from the Mehtab Bagh which is a beautifully landscaped park that surrounds the Taj Mahal grounds. This park is often less crowded than the Taj and also has a great view of the building framed by the green trees and lawn of the garden.
For a more romantic experience, we recommend watching the sunset over the Taj while sipping wine on the balconies of the Oberoi Amarvilas hotel. As the sun sets, the Taj Mahal is at its most photogenic and takes on a dazzling orange hue.
You can also see the Taj Mahal from a distance at the Agra Fort or from some of the rooftop cafes in the city. Many people also visit Itimuad-ud-Dauluah's Tomb which is often called the Baby Taj due to its similar appearance.
Take a Wildlife Safari at Ranthambhore National Park in Ranthambhore
If you want to go on an outdoor adventure together during your honeymoon, then nothing is better than a safari in North India's largest national park. Ranthambhore National Park was once the hunting grounds of the Mughal emperors and they traveled through the area with large caravans looking for tigers.
Today the park has around 70 wild tigers as well as other species of animals and birds that are an absolute joy to photograph. The park is open from sunrise to sunset giving visitors plenty of time to explore the large area on guided tours.
While visiting the national park, couples can also check out the 10th-century Ranthambhore Fort or the nearby temple which is dedicated to Ganesh, the elephant-headed Hindu god.
See a Panoramic View of Old Town at the Amber Fort in Jaipur
Jaipur, also known as the pink city, is located in the state of Rajasthan. This city is known for its old town which was built primarily from pink sandstone.
In the old town, visitors can explore the architecture of ancient India and see almost all of the city's main attractions on foot. These attractions include markets, ancient city walls, and the famous Amber Fort.
The Amber Fort is the most visited fort in India and once you arrive it is easy to see why. As the fort that was once the capital building of Jaipur state and the ruling seat of Maharaja Man Singh I, the Amber Fort is enormous and was built with breathtaking beauty.
From the Char garden of the fort, visitors can get a panoramic view of the entire city including the old town and the surrounding mountains.
Explore the Blue City of Jodhpur
Jodhpur is also located in Rajasthan, but it is quite different from Jaipur in culture and surroundings. Jodhpur is the closest city to the rolling dunes of the Thar Desert and is a great base for visiting the surrounding desert tribes.
Jodhpur is most famous for its bright blue buildings which are located in the old part of the city. In Jodhpur, couples can get lost together exploring the medieval passageways or take an expedition out to the desert to have dinner under the stars.
After site-seeing in the city, many travelers like to stop at Jaswant Thada to relax. Jaswant Thada is an intricately decorated white marble memorial tomb with an expansive front lawn where people can sit comfortably and enjoy the views of the city and fort.
Couples can take beautiful photos anywhere in Jodhpur, however, one of our favorite places for striking photos is the Toorji ka Jhalra ancient step well. This well is newly restored and features rows and rows of sandstone steps that lead down towards the blue water.
Have a Romantic Experience Viewing the Palaces of Udaipur
Udaipur is a green oasis city full of beautiful lakes and built into rolling hills making it very different from any other city in the desert state of Rajasthan. Udaipur is a tranquil city and is the perfect place to go and relax after exploring other areas of India.
The hotels in Udaipur are built specifically to help guests relax with large pools, spas, and beautiful gardens. The city is also full of decadent palaces which can be seen from boats that meander through nearby lakes.
Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar Lake are the most popular lakes to visit in Udaipur. From a boat on Lake Pichola, visitors can see the City Palace Complex and the Ambrai Ghat. A boat ride on Fateh Sagar Lake takes visitors through the rolling green hills and forests.
Experience a Nighttime Ganga Aarti in Varanasi
India is a religious country where most people practice Hinduism. The best place to learn more about religion and spirituality in India is in the ancient Hindu city of Varanasi.
Varanasi is one of the few cities in India where every evening at dusk the Ganga Aarti is performed. The Ganga Aarti is a ritual where flickering lamps and bright flower petals are placed on the Ganges River to honor the gods.
The Ganges is culturally important to all of India as a holy river and is treated with great respect. A great way to learn more about the connection between Indians and this river is to take a boat ride on the Ganges.
Most cruises on the Ganges last between 6 and 8 hours making for a relaxing day talking with your spouse while watching people go about their daily activities on the river's edge.
Boat through Picturesque Canals in Kerala
While most people visiting India will travel only in the northern half of the country if you want to experience all of India it is important to visit the south as well. In South India, our favorite destination is Kerala.
In Kerala, couples can explore the romantic colonial streets of Cochi and find souvenirs in the port town's boutique stores. After spending time in the city, many people enjoy heading out to the villages to explore the backwaters.
The backwaters of Kerala are the areas of the state where rural villages are connected by canals. Here, most villages use waterways and boats as their main method of transportation.
A great way to relax and see more of the local culture is to take a houseboat ride through the villages and backwaters. On the boat, guests will try local food, relax on the upper deck, and spend the night in the main cabin.
Best Honeymoon Hotels in India
When traveling for a honeymoon, it is not only the destinations and activities that are important but also the accommodation.
For newlywed couples, it is essential to book hotels that are beautiful, comfortable, and offer extra services such as spas, pools, gardens, and cultural experiences.
Honeymoon Hotels in Delhi
When staying in Delhi, we recommend booking heritage hotels which offer guests that colonial old-world charm that the city is famous for. One of our favorite heritage hotels in Delhi is the 5-star Claridges hotel. The Claridges offers a swimming pool, six dining options, and afternoon tea served on the lawn.
Another great hotel in Delhi is the Maidens which is a 4-star hotel that was built in 1903 making it one of the oldest heritage hotels in the city. This hotel has two restaurants, a swimming pool, and a beautiful garden which even includes peacocks.
Honeymoon Hotels in Agra
To truly love your experience in Agra, having a beautiful resort hotel to spend time in is a must. Resort hotels are often ornately built with all the modern amenities and offer guests the best of the best during their stay.
In Agra, our favorite resort hotels are the 5-star Jaypee Palace and the 4-star Trident Agra. The Jaypee Palace features an Ayurvedic spa, outdoor swimming pool, and a Turkish bath.
The Trident Agra hotel has an outdoor pool and a dining room that was meant to give guests an incredible view of the Taj Mahal. At the Trident, guests can eat dinner and drink wine while watching the sunset over the Taj.
Honeymoon Hotels in Ranthambhore
When going on a safari, your accommodation should match the adventure you're about to have. That's why when visiting Ranthambhore we recommend trying out villa or tent accommodation. Our favorite options in Ranthambhore are the 5-star Oberoi Vanyavilas, the 5-star Sawai Vilas, and the 4-star Ranthambhore Regency.
Oberoi Vanyavilas is an incredible hotel that offers visitors the opportunity to stay in luxury tents and dine every night under the stars just like the Maharajas would have in their time. Sawai Vilas offers guests a relaxing and private oasis in the jungle to spend time with a private deck for sunbathing.
While the Ranthambhore Regency is less luxurious than the other two options, it is perfect for those who want a good hotel to come back and relax in. The Ranthambhore Regency has an outdoor pool, spa services, and a garden.
Honeymoon Hotels in Jaipur
When visiting the beautiful pink city of Jaipur, the best places to stay are in beautiful palace hotels or at a haveli which is a traditional Indian mansion.
For travelers who want a luxury experience, we recommend the Samode Palace. Built from Jaipur’s pink sandstone, this 475-year-old palace is an excellent example of Mughal architecture. At this hotel, they go above and beyond with their services and have hosted many celebrities and artists.
Another great palace hotel in Jaipur is Chomu Palace which is a 300-year-old building where the Rajasthani princes used to live. We also like the 5-star Samode Haveli for its beautiful atmosphere and its Rajasthani cultural shows where guests can learn more about the local art.
Another great haveli in Jaipur is Shahpura House with restaurant that makes authentic Rajasthani meals.
Honeymoon Hotels in Jodhpur
As Jodhpur is well known for its bright blue townhouses, while you are in the city there is no better place to stay than in the Raas. This hotel was carefully built around the remains of an original townhouse which can be seen and explored by guests.
Visitors at the Raas stay in the modern wing of the hotel with incredible views of the Mehrangarh Fort. The hotel also has a spa with daily meditation classes and traditional Ayurvedic medicine treatments.
Honeymoon Hotels in Udaipur
Located on the banks of Lake Pichola which is one of the most beautiful lakes in the city, Oberoi Udaivilas is a great place to be if you want romantic views and over 30 acres of gardens to explore. This hotel has great views from every room and a terrace restaurant where you can dine outdoors while taking in the scenery.
