Phnom Penh might lack size when compared to its competitors like Jakarta, Hong Kong, and Singapore, but it certainly doesn't lack any of the comfort or potential for a culinary adventure.
You can find any level of accommodation, from youth hostel to resort, and a similarly wide range of restaurants that serve everything from traditional Cambodian dishes to western classics. No matter what you are looking for, these tips should help you narrow down your list of stops in Phnom Penh.

Dining in Phnom Penh
When it comes to dining, Phnom Penh is both large and small. The number of dishes and flavors to try is limitless and the number of restaurants is rapidly growing. So, Phnom Penh has a giant culinary scene.
At the same time, Cambodia has long tended towards street food, and as a result of its traditional culinary practices, until recently has not had a lot by way of western standards in restaurants.
This is changing quickly, and below are a few of our favorites.
Friends the Restaurant - Altruistic Dining
At Friends you will find yourself feeling good inside, not just because of the exciting menu of Tapas style Cambodian food. Friends the Restaurant is a training school for Cambodian street children and the disadvantaged.
As such, the service is unparalleled, and you know that your waiter/waitress is as excited to be there as you are. The menu is diverse, adventurous, and bold. It showcases unique twists on traditional local flavors.
Prices depend on how many dishes you want to try but you can expect a middle of the road bill (around USD15-25 per person), which seems less when you know your money is helping a good cause.
Make sure to sample the vegan sandwiches, and feel free to watch the chefs at work in the open kitchen. With a lively atmosphere and tasteful decorations to top it all off, Friends is a must see!
Pricing is around USD20 a person (with some dishes and drinks).

RomDeng Restaurant - exquisite, classy, and a pool!
A classy garden style dining atmosphere that features Cambodian specialties and local Asian favorites like Burmese Chicken, while maintaining its reputation as a vegetarian friendly stop. The atmosphere inside RomDeng is truly laid-back and gives the visitor the feeling of being in on a secret.
The menu is complex and diverse and features a few novelties such as Red Ants, but these do not distract from the core of the menu. In addition to wonderful food, RomDeng has an international wine and cocktails menu to rival any speakeasy in New York.
Did we mention they have a pool? If exquisite taste, presentation, and service aren't enough, then just be sure to tell the kids there is a pool.
Pricing is on the higher side for Cambodia but ever so worth it, around USD15 a dish.

Hotels in Phnom Penh
Choosing a hotel can be almost as hard as choosing a country to visit. Look at this list of our favorites to get you started.
Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra - modern luxury
The Sofitel at Phnom Penh is arguably one of the nicest modern hotels in all of Cambodia. Expect large, spacious rooms that are spread across equally sprawling grounds. 5 star staff and dining can serve you in your room or restaurant, and can handle anything from French Pastries to traditional Khmer Cuisine.
The facilities of the Sofitel Phnom Penh are what truly set it apart. From the pool to the gym to the lobby itself, you can feel tasteful luxury radiating from the walls. The hotel is especially peaceful in the evenings when the lawns are well lit and perfect for a stroll.
Other highlights include: Breakfast buffet, its central location, and an easy to spot tower that makes walking home a breeze.

Double Leaf Boutique Hotel - an oasis all on its own
Close your eyes and imagine sitting next to a peaceful outdoor pool in your own alcove, away from the world. At the Double Leaf Boutique hotel, this experience will be waiting just outside your door.
For around USD55 a night you can experience quiet luxury on a new level. The hotel pool is a must see; it is made perfect by the surrounding landscaping.
Rooms run a little smaller than at the Sofitel but they are decorated in a more traditional style and affixed with every modern amenity.
The Double Leaf has a high quality restaurant that offers three meals a day (try the Khmer roast Chicken if you stop by during dinner!).

Okay Boutique Hotel Phnom Penh
Do not let the name fool you as this hotel is far from being "ok". The Okay Boutique Hotel comes with the lowest price tag on this list (depending on season and choice of room) but that does not mean it is lacking in any respects.
Expect large, clean rooms that have been tastefully decorated in local style. The hardwood floors and spacious showers are a particularly nice touch. The rest of the hotel is similarly well put together and feels a bit more spread out than the Double Leaf.
Breakfast is served next to the rooftop pool that overlooks Phnom Penh - just let that sink in! Once you have eaten your fill, you can easily explore the city in one of the many tuk-tuks the hotel hires to offer guests rides. You can find them on the street immediately in front of the hotel.
The central location of this hotel is another great benefit. If you only have a limited amount of time in Phnom Penh, this might be the best choice for you.
Rooms will run from USD 60, depending on the type of suite and tourist season, making it a surprisingly affordable option.
